Canadian Lottery Scam
| |
People are being victimized by scam artists posing as
Canadian Lottery officials. The prime targets are seniors.
In a typical case, the victim receives a call from an
individual identifying himself or herself as being an
official of the Canadian Lottery or sweep-stakes. The victim
is told that he or she has won a large sum of money, often
$100,000 to $250,000. The victim then is told he or she must
pay an excise fee to receive the winnings and to wire a sum
of money to a particular individual in Canada. If the victim
makes the transfer, he or she is then instructed to make
additional transfers to meet other fees and taxes. Some
victims who refuse have been threatened with legal action
for failing to comply with "Canadian law."
Other, less elaborate scams, involve letters announcing
that an individual has won and requiring him or her to
forward a much smaller amount of money, such as $9.95 or
$19.95, as a fee. Once an individual has been victimized by
one scheme, he or she will typically receive many other
fraudulent offers. If you are a victim of this scam or have
